The woods were less thick with shrubs and briars once the Merranai crossed the tributary away from the sabretooths, though the trees clumped ever nearer. Leaves covered the ground in heaping piles. The height of summer had moved in, and each of them sweated profusely. Flies circled in swarms, and once the group had to outrun a swarm of angry hornets Micah inadvertently angered. As Malthus plodded along miserably, he marveled at how far his dreams of adventure were from reality. No stories he’d heard as a child told of such drudgery.

Toward the end of the second day after the sabretooth attack, the trees finally thinned. The ground rose. The waters of the Sheel hissed and spluttered nearby to their left as it surged downhill from its origins in the Pryier Peaks.

In front of the group, Aloria called for a halt. For the first time in days, they could see easily up through the forest canopy. The elf stared intently into the cloudless summer sky.

“What do you see?” Karnin called from his position in the rear.

Aloria paused. “Not sure yet.”

After several moments, Malthus saw a speck in the distance. Fortunately for them, Aloria could pick out more detail far sooner than his human eyes.

“Hoods up,” the elf cried. They obeyed immediately, trusting the elf’s judgment. Before Malthus’s eyes, the group was nearly lost to sight, cloaks blending all but Aleena into the surrounding leaves and brush. The priestess used a ring to turn herself invisible. No amount of peering by Malthus could detect her location.

“A lich?” Zylyn asked. A bolt of terror struck through Malthus. He was beyond tired of the undead horrors hunting them unendingly.

Aloria shook her head. “It’s no lich. I think it’s a dragon.”
